Dear 5th Grader & Families,

I am excited to be your teacher this year. We are all hoping this year will start to look a little more “normal” than these past few years, but we are all in this together and we will build a great classroom community for learning and having fun. I look forward to working with each of you in helping your child grow and learn even more this year.

Communication will be an important piece in this year’s success as it always is. Email is the easiest and quickest way to get ahold of me and it is the easiest and quickest way for me to get information to all of you, so I will need your email address. You can always call the school, but please know I will not be able to answer or return phone calls until the end of the school day or not until the following day. By using these two avenues, I will be able to alert your family quickly about any concerns as well as having immediate contact should we (or your child) need to be out of school for an extended period of time. Please send me an email as soon as possible with your child’s full name in the subject line to mandid@eupschools.org. I will work to create a parent email group and will use it to communicate directly with 5th grade families or individuals. It will also give you a direct link to contacting me. If your child has more than one care giver or family home, please make sure all care givers send me an email, so all care givers are getting the same information. Thank you!

During these first few days and weeks of school, we will be establishing our mindset as 5th graders who know how to work hard, be kind, and have fun together. We will also learn new ways to interact while respecting each other’s “personal space”. We will gradually build our stamina in classroom activities, homework, home reading, tests, grades, projects, etc., but for now let us ease into our time together and enjoy this new school year.

As we work hard together at school to continue to fill academic gaps, I will be relying on each family to do their part by offering extra help at home when needed. I will continue to hold high expectations for all my 5th graders to be accountable for their own learning. You will see work sent home that needs more time and help. Please set aside time to work with your child at home, as necessary. Together we can get beyond this challenge and back to the business of lifting each student to his/her potential, academically, socially, and emotionally.

I am sure a lot of you are wondering what supplies will be needed this school year. As for student supplies, you will need #2 pencils, colored pencils or markers, pencil box or bag, a highlighter and water bottle. No need to panic if you don’t have these supplies yet, just try to get them to school as soon as possible. I will have everything else you will need to have a successful year in the 5th grade. If you would like to bring classroom supplies, I would greatly appreciate it. We are always in need of disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, zip lock bags (small and large), tissues, plates, cups, napkins and silverware.

Lastly, your child will be assigned a locker with a school lock on it. There is a one time fee of $10 that will cover your child all the way through High School. Please send this money in as soon as possible. If you write a check, please write it out to SIAS.
